Position Summary

The Director of Business Analytics is responsible for the strategy and implementation of the use of data and analytics to support the business operations of the Pittsburgh Penguins.  This position is primarily focused on collaborating with the business unit leaders with the operations of the Marketing, Partnership Sales, Ticket/Premium Sales and Finance departments, in order to optimize net revenues and meet other goals and objectives set forth in the organizational strategic plan. The Director of Business Analytics will set forth and develop the best-in-class analytical capabilities of the Penguins organization and grow the scope of responsibilities, influence and impact of data analytics within the business operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the various business unit leaders to ensure effective cross-utilization of data in a manner that optimizes net revenues.

  • Collaborate with all business unit leaders and provide leadership and support by developing data-driven strategies and recommendations that help them to meet goals and objectives set forth in the organizational strategic plan. 

  • Work directly with senior leadership to identify, analyze and address key business opportunities and critical business challenges. 

  • Provide strategic and analytical support to senior leadership when evaluating and updating the organizational strategic plan.

    Deliver a broad range of functional responsibilities critical to business operations, including but not limited to:

    • Forecasting, reporting and data visualization.

    • Predictive analytics/modeling, lead scoring and retention strategy.

    • Pricing strategy development.

    • CRM and email marketing.

    • Customer research and segmentation.

    • Marketing analytics and channel strategy.

    • Product development.

    • Fan loyalty program and fan engagement strategy development.

  • Directly inform and partner with business unit managers to properly track current results and positively impact key business drivers including, but not limited to:

    • Increase consumer and corporate revenue (advertising, partnerships, premium, and ticket), concert revenue, and sponsorship activation operations, including inventory management, benchmarking and pricing of assets, and contract adherence. 

    • Improve tailoring of marketing and sales efforts through the deepening of the understanding of fan segments and fan/individual behavior.  

    • Grow ancillary revenue streams, including, but not limited to: merchandise (retail), food and beverage, parking, attendance, etc. 

    • Leverage data and technology to enhance the fan experience. 

  • Create actionable insights and understandings through the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data, building recommendations that directly address organizational goal and objectives.

  • Lead and develop a team, providing clear work direction and individual growth and development opportunities.

Qualifications, Skills and Education Requirements

  • 4-6+ years of experience, including 3+ years in a data driven environment; sports and entertainment industry experience preferred, but not required.

  • 2+ years of management experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, computer science, statistics, mathematics, engineering or other quantitative field; Graduate/advanced degree preferred, but not required.

  • Proven track record of success using data analytics to drive incremental net revenues and meet other organizational goals and objectives.

  • Proven ability to communicate strategy clearly to multiple teams and areas of expertise.

  • Strong quantitative, financial modeling skills, including exposure to SQL and relational databases; demonstrated ability to design and implement statistical models in R and/or Python preferred but not required.

  • High proficiency with Excel, including ability to build complex spreadsheet models, run pivots, macros, v-lookups and other advanced functions.

  • Experience with Tableau or other similar data visualization tools.

  • Ability to deliver both a detail-oriented analyst and executive-level strategy.

  • Ability to prioritize requests based on available resources.

  • Self-starter, independent, creative, ambitious, innovative, results-oriented.
