Position Summary

LAFC seeks to expand its accounting and finance group by adding an experienced Controller.  The new Controller will evaluate and improve existing accounting systems, processes and procedures with the goal of developing a highly efficient, effective, and transparent accounting team capable of partnering across the club’s various business lines and supporting future growth.

The Controller will be a key leader in the financial management of the organization including team accounting, consolidated corporate accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls and procedures. The Controller will have responsibility for all GAAP reporting and will interact directly with the company’s auditors and tax accountants.  In addition, the Controller will also evaluate and create processes for the entire corporate accounting function in partnership with the CFO and the head of venue accounting.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluate all current accounting operations, systems, controls and procedures to optimize efficiency and departmental effectiveness in support of business lines and reporting; develop and manage all accounting operations and systems including A/R, A/P, Payroll, GL, and Revenue Recognition, Inventory and Bank Reconciliations

  • Evaluate the current internal accounting structure and develop and recruit industry-best talent who wholly understand the need for timely, accurate reporting as well as the operational implications and contributions that departmental output would support towards the overall growth of the organization

  • Manage Treasury operations, including cash management and reporting.

  • Manage month-end, quarter-end and year-end closing procedures; prepare and publish timely and accurate financial statements

  • Optimize, develop, document and maintain financial controls; consistently evaluate and develop internal procedures

  • Coordinate compliance with MLS financial policies and reporting requirements; build strong relationships and partner with the League Office to ensure complete compliance with all League requirements

  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants and quarterly lender reporting

  • Serve as the key driver of the annual audit process; partner internally with head of finance and head of venue accounting to aggregate and properly report all financials; build a strong relationship with an external audit firm

  • Support periodic tax compliance reporting

  • Partner with FP&A team and Venue Accounting team to ensure a seamless, collaborative environment optimizing all financial operations and the identification/vetting of potential opportunities

Qualifications, Skills and Education Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Controller or Director of Accounting; 10+ years of accounting experience with strong administrative skills

  • Experience in professional sports, venue management or a related business strongly preferred

  • CPA required

  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures

  • Hands-on experience with creating and modeling financial statements

  • Hands-on experience with GL and month-end/year-end closing procedures

  • Experience with Workday ERP system preferred

  • Proven effective communication skills, both verbal and written
