In July 2015, private equity firm GF Capital launched GF Sports, a live events and sports media entertainment platform. Today, GF Sports owns and operates two ATP Tour men's professional tennis tournaments in the New York Open and the BB&T Atlanta Open, the Longines Masters (Grand Slam of Horse Jumping), the AKC Agility Cup (dog agility), the Wolf Pack Ninjas Tour and, in 2019, will launch the New York Riptide, a National Lacrosse League expansion team located on Long Island, New York. As the popularity of lacrosse continues to rapidly grow in the United States and Canada, the National Lacrosse League has capitalized on its 34 years of success, launching four new franchises in emerging lacrosse markets across the country. The New York Riptide will return a professional franchise to Long Island, which has a long-standing reputation of being a hotbed for lacrosse talent and interest in the game.

The New York Riptide will begin their inaugural season in the NLL in 2019 at Nassau Coliseum. Inspired by traditional New York team colors, the Riptide announced their logo in February 2019 featuring navy blue and orange, while adding seafoam green to capture the riptide effect. The team engaged with the local marketplace to determine the team name, with Riptide quickly becoming the overwhelming choice. Regy Thorpe, recently named head coach and general manager, has more than 20 years of experience at almost every level of men’s and women’s field and box lacrosse. A New York native, Thorpe was an All-American and captain for the Syracuse team that won the 1993 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse National Championship.

Position Summary:

The Vice President of Marketing (VP) for GF Sports will be responsible for the marketing and communications of the New York Riptide. In addition to the Riptide, GF Sports owns and operates the New York Open and BB&T Atlanta Open, the Longines Masters, the AKC Agility Cup and the Wolf Pack Ninjas Tour. While the VP will have a key leadership role with the entire portfolio, each of these properties maintains unique third-party marketing, sales and communications partnerships. The VP will possess a set of strong leadership, communication and liaison skills in order to maximize the effectiveness of various event plans by working closely with multiple parties responsible or having meaningful input to the process and execution of these plans. Additionally, the VP will work with multiple event directors to curate, advise and support the execution of marketing and communications plans on a per property basis.

The VP will focus on branding and creating awareness, buzz and interest for the team. The VP will lead a team to create and implement strategies that raise the profile and relevance of the Riptide, both on and off the field. The VP will be charged with the challenge of catapulting the Riptide locally and nationally in efforts to attract fans, the media and sponsorship partners. With a heavy focus on building community relationships through grassroots marketing, the VP will lead a team in reaching the local youth lacrosse base and millennials.

The VP will be digitally focused and will direct and oversee all areas of Marketing including Brand Management, Advertising, Game Entertainment, Community Relations, Consumer Promotions and Digital Marketing. Additionally, the VP will partner with internal counterparts, including Ticket Sales and Sponsorship, to support revenue goals and drive cross-company strategic initiatives. The VP will have an entrepreneurial mindset and must be able to move quickly and adapt to changing situations. This individual must be driven to succeed and have a work ethic to match.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the GF Sports Marketing and Communications department through effective management and leadership.

  • Direct the overall strategy creation and implementation of the organization’s brand and consumer marketing messaging.

  • Develop, produce and execute all marketing plans with specific key focus on brand development, digital strategy, enhancement of revenue opportunities and proactive and innovative promotional plan creation.

  • Assist in the development of strong grassroots programs that promote ties within the Long Island community to develop an affinity with the team, lacrosse and attract new fans.

  • Collaborate with the Riptide’s Lacrosse Operations to develop cohesive and integrated programs utilizing players and coaches.

  • Collaborate with Ticket Sales to support and provide innovative and creative campaigns to enhance platforms and drive revenue.

  • Collaborate with Sponsorship team to activate and extend the GF Sports brands.

  • Institute and establish a culture and level of accountability with the Marketing Team through daily leadership and management.

  • Enhance synergy between Marketing and Communication in a digital effort to communicate and maximize the overall strategic efforts.

Qualifications, Skills and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in sports management, marketing, business administration or related field from a four-year college or university, or equivalent work experience.

  • Five (5) years of relevant experience in a marketing position at a major league, minor league or collegiate athletics organization.

  • A demonstrated track record of developing and executing marketing campaigns.

  • Effectively and collaboratively communicate clearly among all internal and external constituents.

  • Talented self-starter with an extremely creative mind, strategic ideas and focus on achieving excellence.

  • Proven leadership and management capabilities.

  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills, possessing the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.
