Background

Since joining the National League in 1890, the Dodgers have been an icon in the landscape of American sports.  The team has won six World Series Championships, twenty-two National League (NL) Pennants, fourteen NL Western Division crowns, and two NL Wild Card berths.  The team is synonymous with courage, excellence, pride, and winning.

In 1947, the Brooklyn Dodgers, under the leadership of Branch Rickey, made the most historic move in sports by signing Jackie Robinson, the first African-American player to play in the Major Leagues.  This move signified the first step in breaking down the “color barrier” in baseball and was a catalyst for desegregation in America.  In 1957, the team moved to the West Coast to become the first Major League Baseball franchise to play its games in California.  Since then, some of the best players in baseball history, including Pee Wee Reese, Roy Campanella, Duke Snider, Don Newcombe, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Don Sutton, Fernando Valenzuela, Steve Garvey, Orel Hershiser, and Clayton Kershaw have proudly worn the Dodgers’ uniform.

The team plays its games at legendary Dodger Stadium.  Since 1962, Dodger Stadium has awed spectators with breath-taking views of downtown Los Angeles, tree-lined hills, and the San Gabriel Mountains.  More than 161 million fans have visited the ballpark since its opening.  Sports Illustrated has consistently ranked Dodger Stadium as one of the ballplayers’ favorite places to play.  Dodger Stadium is one of only two privately financed ballparks in Major League Baseball.  In 2012, new ownership put into place a multi-year plan for on-going improvements that will maintain Dodger Stadium’s stature as a premiere sports and entertainment venue for many years to come.

The Dodgers organization is dedicated to bringing championship baseball to Los Angeles, making Dodger Stadium the most entertaining, family-friendly venue in the country, and expanding the Dodgers’ involvement throughout the Los Angeles community.
